When should I start getting Botox?

Botox is the popular girl at school and everyone has heard about her. As more people embrace the magical results that neurotoxins like Botox bring, interested parties are getting younger and younger. As an Aesthetic Injector in Ontario, CA, I have people ask me every day: When should I start getting Botox? "Preventative" Botox is a common term I hear as youthful clients are seeking the syringe 💉. So let's unpack that. Here is everything you need to know about Botox, for beginners.

20-somethings are getting Botox more than ever

This minimally invasive, facial rejuvenation is far from rare. According to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons®, 7.7M people got shot up with Botox (well, Botulinum toxin type A) in 2019. 📈 This number grows year over year because Botox's client range is broadening. It's no longer just reserved for those trying to turn back the clock, but it's actually getting the attention of proactive youth trying to prevent aging in the first place.

When is the right time to start getting botox?

The golden rule of Botox is to begin when YOU need to. That means, if you are noticing frown lines or forehead lines and they are starting to bother you, it's time to consider starting Botox treatments. If you are worried about fine lines turning into larger folds, then preventative Botox is a great option for you.

The right time to start Botox depends on the patient because everyone experiences the signs of aging at different times. If you're a fan of tanning beds or have a habit of smoking 🚬, then you may benefit from Botox much sooner than someone who worships SPF and drinks a gallon of water daily. In my experience though, the majority of Botox users begin in their 30's.

For anyone new to Botox (or fillers or anything!), I recommend booking a consultation with a professional first to assess your unique situation.

What areas can be treated with Botox?

Botox is a miracle worker because of its versatility. It can be administered in many areas of the face from the eyes to the jaw to the forehead depending on the patient's needs. Remember, Botox should always be injected by a professional because there are some facial areas where Botox should never be injected! 🙅🏼‍♀️ A professional knows the difference and will prevent you from looking frozen.

Will Botox make me look frozen?

I hope not! Properly administered Botox should look natural and help you age gracefully, not freeze you in time. This is a common fear because Botox is made to “freeze” the muscles where it is injected. 🥶 Given your unique facial structure, you might be better suited for dermal fillers which are injected to add volume and “fill" instead. Again, a simple consultation will determine the best plan of action for you.

How often do you need to get injected?

If your skin is showing signs of aging, aka deeper wrinkles and crepey texture, you may need Botox treatments more often than a younger patient being treated preventatively. Generally speaking, Botox lasts three to four months. Some bodies may absorb the injection slower and allow longer time in between appointments, but I tell patients to expect 12 weeks to maintain full results.
